Patient Instructions for Anti-reflux Mucosectomy Procedures

After Anesthesia: After waking up from anesthesia, you may start consuming clear fluids after 2 hours, and soft foods can be taken 24 hours after the surgery. However, the timing of your diet may vary depending on your individual condition, and the final decision will be made by your doctor.

Dietary Restrictions: For the first 14 days after the surgery, avoid eating hard or sharp-edged foods, such as potato chips, peanuts, popcorn, and bones. Chew your food thoroughly and avoid swallowing large portions.

Raw Food and Alcohol: Within the first 14 days after the surgery, refrain from consuming raw foods like sashimi, raw vegetables, and oysters. Also, avoid smoking, alcohol, and chewing betel nut for 28 days after the surgery. Cook fresh ingredients thoroughly until they are fully cooked, and opt for light cooking methods such as boiling and steaming. Avoid spicy and deep-fried foods during this period.

Resuming Normal Activities: You can resume your normal daily activities within a tolerable range on the same day as the surgery.

Medications: Remember to take the postoperative medications prescribed by your doctor as scheduled.

Seek Medical Attention: Immediately go to the emergency room if you experience any of the following symptoms:

1.Severe chest or abdominal pain

2.Nausea or vomiting

3.Fever or chills

4.Vomiting blood or coffee ground-like substances

5.Passing blood or very black, watery stools

6.Difficulty swallowing

7.Difficulty breathing

Hospitalization or Emergency Visit: If you require hospitalization or visit the emergency room within 2 weeks after the surgery, inform the healthcare providers that no instruments or tubes should be inserted into your esophagus without prior notice to the operating surgeon.

Post-surgery Discomfort: It is normal to experience a sore throat after the surgery, which should generally last for about 2-3 days. Other possible discomfort includes mild chest discomfort or chest pain. The level of chest discomfort may range from slight chest tightness to mild or severe pain. If you have any concerns, seek immediate medical attention at the outpatient or emergency department.
